Why stock wheel kits for my pallet jacks?

The advantages of having kits on-hand:

  • Faster repairs. When a wheel fails, having the kit on hand gets equipment back in service sooner.
  • Less downtime. Worn or damaged wheels can stop a pallet jack from moving properly, which can slow operations and create safety issues.
  • Better consistency. Stocking the right kit for each common model helps avoid mismatched parts and repeat troubleshooting.
  • Lower maintenance friction. Wheel kits are a normal wear-item for busy warehouses, especially where jacks are used daily.
  • Protection for floors and products. Good wheels reduce noise, floor marking, and rough handling from damaged or dragging wheels.

When stocking makes the most sense

Stocking wheel kits is most useful if you have multiple pallet jacks, frequent wheel wear, rough floors, debris, wet docks, or hard-to-match equipment.

It also makes sense if your team wants to avoid waiting on parts during peak hours.

Practical rule

If the same wheel issues keep coming up, stocking kits usually saves time and money versus buying parts one repair at a time. For a busy operation, it’s basically insurance against avoidable downtime.

For most pallet jacks, high-quality aftermarket wheel kits are usually the better value, while OEM is the safer choice when you need exact fit, warranty protection, or you’re standardizing on a manufacturer-approved part. Aftermarket wheels can often match or exceed OEM performance at a lower price, but quality varies more by supplier.

Generic Partswheel kits contain quality after-market replacement wheels, and the additional hardware, like bearings, axles and snap rings, is free.

Aftermarket wheels

Aftermarket kits are typically 30% to 50% cheaper than OEM replacements, which matters a lot if you maintain a fleet. Good polyurethane aftermarket wheels are often the sweet spot for indoor warehouse use because they balance durability, floor protection, and rolling performance. Different wheel materials are recommended for different applications. Read more about different wheel material.

Simple buying rule

  • Choose aftermarket for cost savings, common models, and fast fleet maintenance.
  • Choose OEM for warranty-sensitive jobs, or specialized jacks.

Generic Parts offers load wheel kits, since load wheels wear the most, and also complete wheel kits that include all the additional parts to replace the steer wheels.

How to replace the load wheels on a manual pallet jack

This is probably the most common maintenance repair on a manual jack. It's easier than you think!

Here is a step-by-step guide to follow for most standard models:

Tools needed

Hammer

3/16" Pin punch

Pliers, helpful for handling and inserting pins.

New load wheel assemblies.

Flip or lay the pallet jack securely on its side, ensuring stable access to the wheel area for safety.

Here is a video how to safely flip the jack.

Removal:

Remove the load wheel axle fastener with 3/16” pin punch and hammer driving out axle roll pin.

Slide or tap out the axle and remove the old load wheels from the fork bracket.

When removing a badly rusted or damaged axle use a 1/2" pin punch and hammer to drive the axle out. If wheels are corroded or stuck, a hacksaw may be used to cut between the bearing and bracket.

Clean the axle and surrounding bracket, removing any accumulated dirt.

Always replace both wheels!

Installation:

Install sleeve into load wheel bearing and position washers on sleeve - one on each side of the wheel.

Place load wheel, sleeve, and washers inside bracket assembly in line with holes in the bracket with sleeve.

Insert axle through bracket, securing load wheel. Install lock nut and tighten. Same on the other fork.

Secure the axle by driving the spring or tension pin back through its hole with the hammer and pin punch.

Repeat the process for the second fork.

You can also watch

our step-by-step video on how to replace the load wheels.

Additional Tips

Use load wheel kits for best results, as these include new axles and fasteners.

And if you need new steer wheels too, order the pre-packaged wheel kits:

you get high quality wheels, and the hardware - axles, washers, etc. - comes for free.

We recommend to have an extra kit on hand to avoid costly downtime.

Regularly inspect wheels to prevent future issues.

Proper replacement will keep the pallet jack running safely and extend its service life.

Step-by-step: How to replace steer wheels

How to replace the steer wheels on your pallet jack

Tools needed:

Flathead screwdriver
Snap ring pliers

Process

First, you need to turn the jack upside down.

Here is a video showing you the correct way to turn your jack over.

Once your jack is turned, remove the hubcaps on each wheel.

Next, use a small six-inch pair of snap ring pliers to remove the snap ring., then slide off the washer.

At this point, the handle will need to be pivoted from one side to the other, allowing for the wheel to slide off the axle.
Now we'll install the new wheels in reverse order: Place the wheel on the axle, add the washer, and secure with the snap-ring. Finish placing the hubcap. Same on the other side of the axle with the second wheel.

Now we turn the jack back upright. You want to lower the jack with the handle in the release position. Pump the handle five or six times which will bleed out any air that may have floated into the valve area.

Find new steer wheels for your pallet jack on our website.

We recommend always having an extra set of wheels to avoid downtime.

We also offer convenient Complete Wheel Kits that contain a set of steer wheels, a set of loads wheels and all the hardware needed to replace them.

Tips for Pallet Jack Safety

They might not be as large and fast as forklifts, but accidents still happen!

The Pallet Jack Pros at Generic Parts compiled some tips (and the list is by no means complete) to keep everyone in the warehouse safe, and to avoid property damage:

Inspect your pallet jack before every use

Always use a jack that is in good shape! Make sure to test the jack thoroughly - rotating the handles, raising and lowering the jack, rolling the wheels, and so on. Replace any parts not working properly immediately to avoid major equipment damage.

Wheels and rollers need to be replaced most often since they get the most wear. We have wheels for all the major brands and ship same-day. Our convenient pre-packaged wheel kits contain all parts needed for replacement.

If you not sure how to replace the load rollers or steer wheels, our step-by-step videos will help. You will find other convenient videos on our YouTube channel to help you replace the handle, rebuild the hydraulic unit, and more.

Give sufficient Clearance

Make sure your pallet jack won't unexpectedly catch on anything. Lift the load to give it 1 inch of clearance off the ground. Most of the time that is enough, but  check the route in advance to make sure.

Don't let hands or feet get under it

Always be conscious of where you are standing or placing your hands around its forks as you lower the jack. Most of the time raising or lowering the jack is no problem, but don't risk that it will fail and come crashing down with disastrous consequences.
Also be aware of the places where the "pinch" motion could catch your hands or feet. Often hurried work and inattention can lead to avoidable accidents.

Ask for help if you need it

When pushing a jack with a big load that you can't fully see over or around, it's important to not try to move it anyway. Instead, enlist the help of a coworker to ensure you don't run into anything or anyone.
Do not stack materials higher that eye level!

Pull, don't push

Pull the pallet jack whenever possible. Pushing the equipment makes it less maneuverable and you risk running into something, or someone, when going around a corner.

Know your Load

To prevent an unstable load, use a container for smaller items and secure larger items by bundling them up. Make sure the load is evenly distributed. A top-heavy load can tip over. Always load the heaviest items first. Center the forks evenly under the load to maintain good balance and stability and make sure the forks are positioned completely under the pallet. Never overload.
OSHA recommends limiting the weight of loads so the necessary pushing force is less than 50 pounds.

Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

It’s important to have all the vital tools and equipment to make each lifting or handling job both easy and safe. Here are the necessities:

Leather Gloves: Use leather gloves when working with large, heavy materials that have sharp or rough edges.
Back Belts: A back belt is helpful in supporting your lower back while using hand trucks, carts, and pallet jacks. Make sure you have the proper fit and that it is being worn on your lower back.
Protective Footwear: Transporting items in certain areas can put you at risk for foot injuries due to falling, rolling objects or pointed materials that can pierce the sole. You may also need special designs of footwear like non-skid soles and steel-toed boots when there are slip or trip hazards in your worksite.

Additionally

we recommend the pallet truck toe guard, to reduce the risk of the pallet jack rolling over your foot.

Dura-Guard toe guard

Use a pallet jack stop to prevent the jack from rolling out of control especially on an incline.

Pallet Jack Stop
Make sure you move the jack out of traffic areas once you're done using it. You don't want anyone to trip over the forks!

Remember, Generic Parts Service has quality replacement parts for your pallet jack in stock, and we ship same day if you order before 6 P.M. (EST).
We also carry replacement parts for electric lift trucks and forklifts.

Why buy a wheel kit?   Wheel kits are economical and convenient, saving you time and money. Every wheel kit includes all the hardware you need for easy to install wheel replacement. Most orders are shipped the same day and come in a compact, easy to store box.

Most wheel kits come with Durarun 95A Poly Wheel assemblies with bearings which are ideal for display floors, carpeting, and warehouses. They mark floors the least and roll easily and quietly.

XL Wheel kits come with XL 97A Poly Wheel assemblies with bearings: Longer lasting and harder, they roll more easily than 95A Poly. XL 97A Poly wheels are also engineered specifically to reduce the likelihood of delamination. If delamination is an issue, we recommend XL 97A poly load wheels.
