What do you mean by "bleeding" your jack?

A manual pallet jack is usually bled by pumping the handle up and down the hydraulics with the jack unloaded and the control in the lower position until all air is purged and the lift becomes firm.

Why would I need to do this?

Air can seep into the hydraulic system. This could be caused by improper handling, such as tilting the pallet jack. When air gets into the system, it hinders the hydraulics from working and the pallet jack won’t lift anymore. Bleeding your jack releases the air.

And how do I bleed my jack?

Safety and prep

Park the pallet jack on a flat, stable floor and block the wheels so it won't roll.
Remove any load.

Bleeding

This is the procedure for most standard jacks (no opening screws):
  • Set the operating lever to “lift.”
  • Push the handle all the way down until it stops.
  • Move the lever to “lower.”
  • With the lever held in “lower,” pump the handle up and down vigorously 10–20 times.
  • Return the lever to “neutral” or “lift” and test lifting the empty forks. If lift has improved, test with a light load.

Repeat the sequence several times if the first cycle only partially improves lift.

What do I do if the jack still will not lift?

Set the lowering valve to its lowest setting, remove or open the reservoir fill plug, and verify the fluid is up to the correct level; top up if low.

After refilling, cycle the handle 10–20 times with the control in “lower” to purge any remaining air.

If it still won't lift, you may have worn seals, a faulty valve, or internal damage that requires a new seal kit or professional service: Email your pallet jack brand and model, and an outline of your problem, to csinfo@genericparts.com and we will provide technical help.

THE HOLIDAYS ARE COMING

Get your jacks ready for the busy season with this checklist

Here are five important items for your checklist to make sure your warehouse is prepared.
1. Check your warehouse floors and outdoor loading areas to make sure the workplace is clean and clear of any obstacles. Make sure that debris and spills are cleaned and swept up so that your operating environment is safe for your equipment to operate in. Debris and spills can ruin or shorten the life of your wheels or get in the way of your loads.

2. Inspect the wheels on your pallet jacks and forklifts regularly to make sure that they are rolling easily and that there are no flat spots or delamination. Over time, the poly or rubber on your wheels can crack or wear unevenly resulting in unstable and unsafe loads. This can cause additional stress on your machine and on your workers' hands and arms due to vibration and rolling instability. We offer convenient wheel kits for manual pallet jacks and electric lift trucks

3. Have you looked at the forks lately?  Make sure there are no cracks or damage as the forks bear the brunt of the load. Using a damaged jack can cause a load to shift and fall and may damage products or cause injuries to your workers.

4. Check the hydraulic pump for leaks and make sure that it is operating properly. Does it pump up and hold your load? Does it lower safely?

5. Test the handles, levers, controls, and horn where applicable, so that you are confident everything is working properly before you add a heavy load.

IDENTIFY YOUR PALLET JACK

You called Generic Parts because your pallet jack needs some work. But the label or data plate is missing or it has been painted over and you just don’t know what make or model you have. Or perhaps it was imported or re-branded and you are not finding the parts information you need.
You are in luck because most manual pallet jacks can be identified by the hydraulic pump on the pallet jack. The hydraulic unit is the main identifying point on any manual pallet jack.
Generic Parts has line drawings for many of the most common pallet jack on our website to help you compare and identify your pallet jack model.
Perhaps you have looked at the line drawings but are not quite sure. We can help you identify your pallet jack!
Email a side view picture of the hydraulic unit to csinfo@genericparts.com

Text your photo to our dedicated text line - 503-523-8990.
Be sure to let us know what information you have on the jack and what parts you are looking for. Then we can respond with parts information and if possible a quote. And you can always call us for assistance during our normal business hours 6 AM to 4:30 PM PDT at our free technical helpline:

Why ID your pallet jack?

Why bother to Identify Your Jack?

One of the most common calls we receive in customer service goes like this...

Me - Thank you for calling Generic Parts, this is Nicole how can I help you?

You - Hey, I've got this pallet jack, don't know the brand but I need the load wheels. Can you help me with that? Is there a generic (no pun intended) wheel I can use?

Me - We carry wheels for most jacks out there. Can you send me a picture of the hydraulic unit? I can use that to identify what you have and then I'll know what wheels you need. You can e-mail or text a pic to our Customer Service. Can I give you that info?

Now at this point the conversation can go one of many ways. Some simply ask where they can send the picture. Some become very confused as to why a pic of the pump will get the wheels. Then some just decide it's too much work and they don't want to mess with it.

If you fall into the 2nd or 3rd category there's no need to be confused, frustrated or feel the task is too great my wheel replacing friends!

With so many different types and styles of manual pallet jacks, you may be thinking it's a hassle when you can just buy a new one (we have those too by the way - and they have a 3 year warranty).

I have a secret to tell you -based on a photo of your pallet jack pump, we can quickly and accurately determine the make/model of your pallet jack 99% of the time. It is really that easy.

Why spend $300+ on a pallet jack (and have to figure out what to do with the "dead" one you are replacing) when the remedy can be much less expensive and we do most of the heavy lifting (pun completely intended)

Here's how the process works:

1. Text a side view of the hydraulic pump to (503)523-8990 (include your contact info)- Or - E-mail a side-view photo of the hydraulic pump to CSinfo@GenericParts.com

2. In-house technician ID's unit based on photo submission

3. We call you up with a quote (or send written quote via e-mail)

4. You order replacement parts online or call (800)331-0839

What is a "side-view photo" you ask? Here is an example. It's the most helpful view for us to see the pump body and some of the features that may determine a specific factory variation.

That's it! Once we know what you have we have tools like exploded view breakdowns and videos to guide you through an efficient repair process.

Running low on time or unable to send the photo...? I'm going to share with you a resource we created so you can identify the jack. It's called the hydraulic unit identification sheet so you can identify what you have also.

Pretty neat what a single, clear and correctly positioned photo can accomplish.

Your customer will be happy with right parts the first time. Your bottom line grows with new resources to increase business and support to customer relationships. The landfill is one pallet jack lighter.

We hope you found this blog post helpful! Have an idea or topic for us to cover in the future? Send them over to CSInfo@Genericparts.com !

Pallet Jack Hydraulic Unit Inspection Tips

Inspect the outside of the pallet jack hydraulic pump for oil leaks. Test the hydraulic unit under a load to determine if there is a problem.

This can be done by lifting a heavy pallet and letting it stand for 15-20 minutes.
Trouble shooting tips for possible problems with your hydraulic unit:

Jack fails to lift load:
  1. Air lock inside pump - place the control lever into release position, then pump the handle rapidly about 10-15 times.
  2. Low fluid level - with the jack lowered, remove filler plug. Fill the reservoir until the oil is level with the fill plug hole. Bleed the unit. Replace the filler plug, creating a snug fit. Do not over-tighten.
Jack fails to lower:
  1. Look for any bent frame parts (lifting link, push rod, etc.) Bent frame parts need to be replaced.
  2. The handle control may be out of adjustment.
Jack lifts in short increments:
  1. Lack of oil pressure - check fluid level.
  2. Reservoir filler plug leaking - replace the washer and filler plug and replenish oil as necessary.
One fork lifts, the other does not:
Check for damage in the following areas and their attached parts:
  1. Lifting link (lifting link pin and traverse shoulder pin)
  2. Pushrod
  3. Load roller bracket (pivot axle)
Note:
Always use SP UNI-HO hydraulic oil. Do not use automotive oil or hydraulic brake fluid.
